What are the major issues with green roofs?
The key issue with any green roof is the integrity of the waterproofing; after all it must perform its most important function of keeping water out. Two problems can arise: lack of the membrane’s resistance to roots and rhizomes and puncture during installation.
First, choose a membrane that satisfies the second and higher requirement of the FLL standard for green roofs offering resistance to both roots and rhizomes. Having this resistance is essential because if roots or rhizomes should penetrate the waterproofing layer, integrity will be lost and the roof will leak.
Secondly, installing a modular green roof system can be delayed until following trades have been completed. The integrity of the waterproofing can be tested at this stage prior to the installation of the pre-established modular trays.
For complete peace of mind, choose a manufacturer who is prepared to offer a guarantee to cover all products in the roof build up - including the vapour barrier, insulation and membrane to the green roof itself.
