PEOPLE PROFILE A day in the life of... Bill Timpany, junior sales executive at Recticel Insulation “I’m one of three junior sales executives at Recticel. I work within the north which spans from the Midlands to the North of Scotland. For the most part, my job involves account managing; travelling to branches and ensuring each has the requisite stock of Recticel products. I deal with everyone from store-level staff to regional directors. As well as being on-hand to raise any stock issues with our own sales teams, I provide product training to Recticel’s customers. I also participate in open days and trade days where I engage with contractors on our products’ use. I’m one year into my three-year graduate scheme at Recticel. I’ve learnt so much during that time. For example, I’ve completed a Roof Access Training course which means I can actually offer training support for contractors on site. I live in York which means a typical week sees me spend at least three nights away from home. But I’m not complaining – I get to see some incredible places en route. The journey across the Highlands – which I make every couple of months – is my favourite. It takes in Fraserburgh – one of the coldest places in the world, I reckon – and includes driving through places such as Inverness and the Isle of Skye, where there’s a beautiful castle in the middle of a lake; a perfect picture opportunity. Another wonderful element of my work is the many people I get to meet on a daily basis. In this job, sometimes the work and social worlds collide. The other evening for instance, during a branch Bill Timpany “I’m one year into my three-year graduate scheme at Recticel. I’ve learnt so much during that time. For example, I’ve completed a Roof Access Training course which means I can actually offer training support for contractors on site” visit to Orkney, I was invited to a Builder’s Dinner; a gathering of contractors and other industry members. Events such as this are a great way to make new contacts, as well as discuss aspects of the sector with those at the sharp end, so to speak. As graduates, we are afforded plenty of trust from our seniors at Recticel. I manage my own workload; plan my own branch visits. As long as the work gets done we are handed the responsibility to make the most of the opportunity we’ve been given. I’m 23 and this is my first ‘real’ job, so I’m incredibly respectful of the faith my employer has invested in me at this relatively early stage of my career. As for the future, I’m looking to progress my career with Recticel whenever an opportunity arises. The next step for me is sales manager, but there’s plenty of time. I’m just enjoying my current role; getting to know more about the industry as days progress, meeting lots of knowledgeable people and of course… viewing lots of glorious scenery.” www.recticelinsulation.co.uk With the construction sector reportedly suffering from an image problem and struggling to attract the next generation of workers both on site, in the factory and in the office, RCI talks to Bill Timpany (23), of Recticel Insulation, who is making the most of Recticel’s graduate programme... “I’m just enjoying my current role; getting to know more about the industry as days progress” Flat roof leak detectors Dry Roof Pro’ • lightweight & portable • easy to use • clear backlit lcd display • alarm volume control • audible & visual fault indicators • ce approved • kit contains all items required to start testing immediately • test up to 2000m2 per day • test membrane thicknesses between 64 microns and 25.6mm www.buckleysinternational.com tel: 01303 278888 • email: sales@buckleys.co.uk
