RCI SHOW 2017 REVIEW That's a wrap for the RCI Show 2017! We had a blast! Thanks to everyone that visited our stand - we loved meeting you all @SIGRoofing Thoroughly enjoyed the RCI Show this year! And thank you to all who visited us and the Expanding Solutions team at the parabola @jablite RCI Show 2017 – You’ve been AMAZING! A massive THANKS to everyone who came to see us over the 2 days. Until next time! @westwoodliquid It’s been a busy show this year! @FlexR_UK Incredible 2 days at #RCIShow2017! #teamwork #roofing @MoyMaterialsLtd We had a successful RCI Show this week. We were really busy over the couple of days so thank you to everyone who stopped by @Official_IOR We had such a wonderful time at #RCIShow2017 meeting with our customers and sharing our great productivity boosting products @OMGroofing 1. The industry is busy – really busy The most heartening thing we picked up at the show was how busy the roofing industry is right now. It’s easy to get sucked into some of the national news headlines, which constantly bang on about the uncertainty that the UK is experiencing. However, we heard it time and again from different roofing contractors about how much work is out there at the moment. Some of these companies aren’t just doing well – they’re storming it – their words, not mine! There’s plenty of work to go around at the moment, but what is more encouraging is the fact that there’s no sign of it slowing down. I think the likes of Steph McGovern from BBC Breakfast should come and talk to roofers to get a good news story about the UK construction industry! 2. Industry skills The perennial problem of an industry skills shortage went hand in hand with our conversations about how busy roofers are. Good people are scarce, and although there is a trickle of young people in the pipeline, we need a flood. We saw on the schedule of seminars that skills shortages and training were big topics. Whilst it’s great that these issues are being discussed and debated, I think we need to get to the nub of the So much to see, listen to and interact with at the RCI Show 2017... problem, which is how to make the industry more attractive and lucrative as a career option for young people. 3. Supply If one issue dominated the show, it was the supply of materials. We all know that there are parts of the roofing industry where materials are in very short supply – including some batten suppliers – but it’s not us. We’re looking good into quarter two of 2018 because we are able to secure the volumes we need up to six months ahead. This is no mean feat when you consider that the global demand for timber has gone through the roof. What was interesting was that very few people talked price. In years gone by, there’d always be banter at the RCI Show around price; if the rumour mill got wind of even a very small price increase, we’d all get it in the neck. But at this show, there seemed to be an acceptance around the costs of goods because of factors such as interest rises, the declining value of sterling and general business uncertainty. 4. We’re not just batten experts I think we surprised people this year. Anyone who knows of SR Timber will invariably mention us in the same breath as ‘roofing batten’ – which is a good thing because we are continuing to grow as the UK’s largest importer of roofing batten. We had some fun demonstrating our wealth of knowledge and expertise by running a simple challenge – inviting visitors to try to Stump SR Timber by asking us absolutely any question about batten. The questions we were asked were very revealing and we’re in the process of compiling them, as they will be the subject of a separate article in RCI. Whilst roofing batten will always be the star of the show, we also put the spotlight on Cedar Shingles and Scaffold Boards – and they proved a popular talking point, largely because of the way we displayed them. Enquiries for these two products were higher than we forecast, and it was great to show people that we’re about more than just batten. 5. Stand-ing out In all the time we’ve exhibited at the RCI Show, this year’s stand was the best ever. And that made a huge difference – in terms of both the number of people who came to talk to us and the quality of enquiries that we had over the two days. If I’m honest, I’m not a stand designer – as long as I’ve got products on the stand to showcase to people, I’m happy. Our team really pulled it out of the bag this year, with lots of simple things done really well. The quality of our photography, the white backdrop and the display of shingles all worked so well together, and they were a talking point for people who came to talk to us. And they came in their droves. 030 DECEMBER 2017 RCIMAG.COM The roofing, cladding and insulation industry once again descended on the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, for the latest instalment of the RCI Show. Organiser Unity Media Exhibitions pointed to a great visitor mix of architects, specifiers, contractors and developers who created a real buzz over the two-day exhibition, and made the most of the 120+ exhibition stands, bustling demo zones and standing-room only seminars and debates. As organisers, we would like to thank all those who took time out of their busy work schedules to make the most of the broad range of manufacturers, associations and suppliers on show, as well as the many show attractions. Aman Chahal, director of TaperedPlus, who visited the RCI Show to see what’s new in the market, summed up the mood of visitors when he told us: “Another great show organised and arranged by the RCI team; so much to see from premium manufacturers to emerging technologies – there really is something for everyone.” And there really was with strong manufacturer representation from the pitched and flat roofing sectors including Cembrit, Crest Brick & Slate, Wienerberger, Danosa, Flex R, Soprema UK, WestWood Liquid Technologies and Polyroof; the cladding sector including Ash & Lacy, Associated Lead Mills, Dales Fabrication and Firth Steels; and the insulation sector including show sponsor Jablite who launched its new consultancy Expanding Solutions from its amazing Parabola stand, which was designed by leading designer Michael Sodeau, CTF Insulation, Eagle Insulations, Kingspan, Knauf Insulation and ROCKWOOL, as well as associated products and the leading Associations. What one exhibitor learned at the RCI Show... We sat down with Shaun Revill, trading director of batten manufacturer and regular RCI Show exhibitor SR Timber, to hear what he picked up from speaking to visitors and the general mood at the show...
