The National College for High Speed Rail, which opens its doors to learners for the first time in September, is the largest of five new national colleges being created by the Government to ensure British workers learn world-class skills. The solid bronze cladding, redolent of the site’s industrial past, has been perforated in places with binary code patterns. This is effectively juxtaposed with the transparency of large areas of glazed curtain walling which allow onlookers a glimpse of the activities within. The building had to be as energyefficient as possible and, in line with funding guidance from BIS and the Skills Funding Agency, a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ has been targeted for the new development. To meet these requirements, a fabric first approach was adopted and several Kingspan Kooltherm products were specified across the site, most notably the new Kingspan Kooltherm K110 Soffit Board. The main entrance is defined by a simple yet striking cantilevered upper floor, providing a sheltered social space in front of the building. To insulate this, Kingspan Kooltherm K110 Soffit Board was installed by Sage Roofing. The product is a premium performance insulation board comprising an advanced fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation core with a thermal conductivity of 0.018 W/m·K across all board thicknesses. This performance, combined with its BRE Green Guide rating of A+, help to contribute towards the award of credits within the BREEAM assessments. www.kingspaninsulation.co.uk POLYFOAM XPS, the extruded polystyrene insulation manufactured by RAVATHERM UK, has received a British Board of Agrément (BBA) certificate for its inverted roof system and floor board insulation. POLYFOAM XPS Floorboard and inverted roof solutions passed a series of comprehensive and independent assessments set by the BBA, including laboratory tests, onsite evaluations and quality management inspections. The BBA certification complies with Building Regulations and the National House Building Council (NHBC) standards and demonstrates exceptional design considerations as well as technical and installation guidance. With its headquarters based in Hartlepool, RAVATHERM UK’s POLYFOAM XPS was assessed on the thermal performance, durability, condensation risk and resistance to foot traffic on its inverted roof system. The extruded polystyrene (XPS) board is used with a watercontrol membrane in inverted flat roofs, as well as pedestriantrafficked balconies and terraces with either zero pitch roofs and slopes between 1:80 and 1:6. The BBA certificate also covers RAVATHERM UK’s POLYFOAM XPS Floorboard Standard and Extra, which can be specified as thermal insulation on ground-bearing or suspended concrete floors in new and existing buildings. The Floorboard products can be specified for both domestic and non-domestic use and remain effective as an insulation for the life of the building. The BBA certificate showcases our continuous commitment to providing fully tested and accredited solutions to the marketplace, and ensures POLYFOAM XPS not only meets but exceeds our customers’ expectations.” The BBA certificate follows recently achieved International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) certificates for RAVATHERM UK, including ISO BS EN 9001:2015 for Quality Management System, ISO BS EN 14001:2015 for Environmental Management System (EMS), ISO 50001- Energy Management certification, and a British Standard Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification (OHSAS) 18001 accreditation. RAVATHERM UK, which sits within the Ravago Building & Construction Solutions (RBCS) division, is one of five XPS manufacturing plants across Europe. This cornerstone of the Ravago Group has grown from a local Belgian activity in the sixties to a pan-European division dedicated to developing and distributing specialised building and construction solutions across European, Turkish and CIS markets. www.ravatherm.co.uk A derelict Grade B listed hotel in Kinross, Scotland, has been transformed into a modern family home, with help from the ultra-slim Kingspan OPTIM-R Flooring System. Ceiling height in the ground floor hallway where a new staircase needed to be installed was particularly low. To meet the Building Standards for both the head height for the staircase and thermal performance, the Kingspan OPTIM-R Flooring System was specified in a 30mm thickness. Kingspan OPTIM-R vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope. This design allows them to achieve optimum levels of insulation performance with a declared value thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m.K despite their minimal thickness. With every installation of a Kingspan OPTIM-R System, Kingspan’s specialist technical team provides detailed system layouts and instructions for the project to help streamline the installation whilst keeping the construction thickness to a minimum. 20-40mm thick Kingspan OPTIM-R panels are the only vacuum insulation panels in the world to be certified under the independent BDA Agrément scheme. This confirms that the products will perform as expected when installed to Kingspan Insulation’s recommendations.
