Got a single ply roofing query or issue you would like to discuss? Contact The SPRA Helpline: Tel: 0845 154 7188 www.spra.co.uk visible); It is not a substitute for the roofing contractor’s supervision or for an agreed ITP. Testing for integrity Testing to demonstrate integrity is also a grey area as regards main contractor procedures. Whilst testing by the sub-contractor may assist their own quality control (and perhaps identify damage issues) it is no substitute for testing by a qualified and independent service provider prior to practical completion. SPRA welcomes the imminent reorganisation of the testing industry into a new professional body. Our Guide ‘Nondestructive testing of single ply membrane roof coverings’, which includes a summary code of conduct, remains a key reference for employers and main contractors. Supporting main contractor training SPRA has always offered training workshops to provide an independent, authoritative complement to manufacturer presentations and some main contractors have taken this up to good effect. There are plans to formalise this in a bespoke training course. Some main contractors are also changing their training style. The excellent new Willmott Dixon training centre is a good example. Here delegates must pick out ‘things done wrong’ from ‘things done right’ in full-size mock-ups across a range of trades. This1 reinforces understanding for those who are used to the coal-face of construction, away from warm design offices. SPRA also contributed to their recent ‘Quality Delivery’ journal, which is specifically aimed at site management personnel. The future One of the positives to emerge from the various Grenfell Tower investigations may be a renewed recognition of the value of the clerk of works. But any such emphasis will not return as it was. So trade associations must find new ways to achieve ‘right first time’ using new media and digital technology. We have the guidance; now it’s all about communication. Online and tablet-based quick reference pages on the roofing package and 3D visualisation of details could be one approach.
