BEMO AT THE WORLD CUP IN BRAZIL The newly constructed Estádio das Dunas stadium in Brazil is designed to reflect the natural free flowing curves of the famous sand dunes of the Natal region. The stadium is designed so that it can be partially rebuilt and reduced in size aft er the World Cup. The seating capacity will then be reduced from its current 45,000 to 30,000. During the planning phase, the sustainability of the arena played a major role. The energy effi ciency and the use of resources during the construction and operation of the stadium were underlined by a targeted LEED certifi cation. LEED is intended to help building owners to be more environmentally responsible through the use of effi cient resources. This method was adopted to meet the stringent requirements of FIFA. The steel structure of the stadium was formed by use of a polygonal space frame. Between the individual roof sections, there are smaller sections of polycarbonate roof-lights allowing natural light into the stadium. The BEMO-DOME system was fi xed back to purlins in the space frame which creates the support structure. BEMO-DOME compensates for the tolerances within the steelwork and produces the desired curvature over the support structure. Then, more than 26 000 m2 of BEMO-MONRO profi les were installed, along with a profi led liner sheet and a mixture of acoustic insulation and quilt insulation. The extremely lightweight BEMO roof makes it possible for the structure to cantilever without the need for additional supports. The project and design was awarded to BEMO based on their 3D site measurement capabilities. A key factor was the BEMO-DOME substructure, which ensures that the desired freeform surface is followed and steelwork tolerances from the supporting structure do not aff ect the aesthetics.
