PITCHED ROOFING Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slates have been specified by Milton Keynes Council for a 2,000m² school roof replacement project in the historical town of Newport Pagnell, which also used the company’s Cedral Weatherboard to replace existing cladding. A building survey carried out on behalf of Milton Keynes Council found that the existing slate roof on one of the town’s primary schools, Tickford Park, was deteriorating after roughly 40 years and in need of complete replacement. The council decided to use fibre cement slates as a more cost-effective solution for the roof refurbishment but wanted to make sure they complemented the school and its surroundings. Marley Eternit’s Thrutone fibre cement slates were chosen as the blue black colour closely matched the original slates on the roof and the surrounding buildings. As part of the school refurbishment project, existing cladding was replaced with Marley Eternit’s fibre cement Cedral Weatherboard around the high level windows to improve insulation and Zink Copper Stainless weatherproofing. The colour pallet of 22 factory-applied colours (including three woodstain finishes) provided the flexibility to select a colour that would both complement the Thrutone slates and blend in with the historical surroundings. Charlotte Hughes, product manager at Marley Eternit, said: “This design flexibility is one of the key drivers for the current high demand for fibre cement slates, particularly for our Thrutone product, which can be used at a lower minimum pitch of just 15 degrees and is now available in six different colours and three shapes. “We are increasingly seeing the combination of our fibre cement slates with Cedral Weatherboard for a modern aesthetic. The natural timber effect of the weatherboard complements the sleek modern lines of the fibre cement slates, offering a low-cost alternative to traditional timber weatherboarding.” www.marleyeternit.co.uk Multi-use joists School restoration Pasquill has completed part of a £42 million new acute mental health facility in Hertfordshire called Kingsley Green. The company provided roof trusses and Posi-joists from four of its branches, working to tight time constraints on behalf of the timber frame company Innovare Systems, who faced a 20 week build programme to erect 24,000 m² of SIPs panels. The trusses not only supported the SIPs roof panels, but also acted as racking to the timber frame structure. Those supplied varied from 1.8m to 4.5m centres, with most being factory clad with plywood or plasterboard to form internal partitions as a continuation of the wall panels below. Posi-joists were also supplied for off-site cassette production ready to be craned into position for speed of construction. Roof and floor cassettes up to 2.4m wide were built, with some joists measuring up to 8m. The metal web joists can be used in a broad variety of applications, from domestic housing through to commercial property developments and public sector buildings such as Kingsley Green. They are dimensionally stable, allowing designers freedom for internal room layouts, thanks to their ability to cover large spans. Their open web design means easy installation of and access to services, and their combination of timber and steel web makes them lightweight but strong. The first area of the build incorporated an energy centre flat roof, a sedum flat roof and a two storey main office block, which were all designed using Posi-joists. The second area included wards or wings which were single storey buildings using trusses. Varied design options were required in particular for areas in which the project’s architects required sloping ceilings in corridors and open ceilings. www.pasquill.co.uk 01992 801927 www.almhm.co.uk Is your direct mail sending you round the bend?
