Are you ready to go flame-free?
With the NFRC’s Safe2Torch campaign getting strong support across the UK’s flat roofing industry, there’s growing awareness that the use of gas
torches isn’t always appropriate for fixing bituminous roofs. Warwick Badams from Fixfast, explains why roofers should be ready to offer alternatives
Figures from the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE) show there are 11 fires
on construction sites in the UK every day.
And, according to Zurich Insurance, 15%
of all fires on commercial and industrial
properties are caused by hot works.
Thankfully, not all are major incidents and few
injuries results from them. But, with the damage
caused by these fires totalling over a million pounds
each day, it’s not surprising building owners, their
insurers, and main contractors are keen to see
something done about this situation.
The National Federation of Roofing Contractors’
(NFRC’s) great Safe2Torch campaign aims to
reduce the risk of roof fires from the use of gas
torches by encouraging proper consideration of
all potential fire risks when the roof system
is specified. It gives clear and helpful
guidance on when and where gas torches
shouldn’t be used on a flat roof, listing 19
different roof features or situations where
that’s the case.
In fact, the NFRC estimates that at least
half of all flat roof installations in the UK
require a flame-free alternative fixing method
