Project1_Layout 1 07/05/2013 CLADDING & SHEETING Pushing the envelope: standing steam roofing Here Richard Price, technical director at Catnic, discusses why pre-coated metal standing seam roofing and cladding systems enable new design possibilities for both new and retrofit applications Pre-coated metal standing seam systems are designed to accommodate conventional roofs to a pitch as low as 5°. This potential to cater to such a low pitch allows architects the freedom to push the envelope of roof design. Specified as a cost-effective alternative to the more traditional copper and zinc options, standing seam systems are suitable for both commercial and residential markets. Firstly, standing seam systems allow for the use of a mono pitch roof, rather than a duo pitch roof – enabling more bespoke, modern designs to be created. The low pitch capabilities of standing seam roofing systems can also reduce the overall height of a property. This could assist with potential planning constraints, without compromising on design. Additional living area For refurbishment projects, the use of standing seam systems can actually allow for the repurposing of unused loft space to create an additional living area. This is because with the ability to have a roof pitched at just 5°, contractors can increase the amount of headroom offered to the end client by up to 44% in comparison to a standard 40° pitch. The majority of standing seam systems also provide the ability to incorporate an array of accessories, to suit a range of design scenarios – including mansards and dormers. Without compromising the integrity of the pre-coated panels, soffits, gutters, fascia and even photovoltaic fixing brackets, can be included to guarantee that the finished product retains both the aesthetic and performance capabilities required. Rather than using a mixture of different products, pre-coated metal standing seam systems can provide consistency to the building design, and in turn, ensure an easy and efficient installation process. The lighter weight makes handling of the panels easier, whilst pre-punched fixing holes, and a range of standard trims means the installation of standing seam metal roofing such as Catnic’s SSR2 Roofing and Cladding system is both fast and effective. In addition, pre-coated metal standing seam “The new generation of precoated standing seam systems provide a range of opportunities to contractors in terms of design flexibility” 036 MARCH 2018 RCIMAG.COM systems that are not reliant on roll forming or seaming on-site, help to ensure workmanship levels also remain consistent. Modern design aesthetic As well as a significant amount of newbuild projects utilising standing seam roofing panels, there is also a growing trend for more traditional buildings seeking the modern design aesthetic that this new generation of products can offer. Again, lightweight pre-coated standing seam systems can be beneficial in a retrofit application. Manufactured from Tata Steel’s Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra pre-finished steel, we have seen our system increasingly specified for extensions – providing a clean and contemporary update for older properties. The roof and cladding panels, designed in conjunction with leading architects to produce a versatile palette, are available in a variety of colours that are sympathetic to the urban landscape. The tonal matte shades ensure a harmonious and tasteful integration with the surrounding built environment – integrating seamlessly with a variety of façade materials including glass, brick, wood, stone and render. The new generation of pre-coated standing seam systems provide a range of opportunities to contractors in terms of design flexibility. Whether the property is a newbuild or retrofit, these systems provide a lightweight, durable and attractive solution – reducing overall installation time and increasing the level of quality of the finished product. www.catnic.com
