Flexiphalte - the ultimate watertight solution
Dave Maginnis, managing director at UK roofing contractor BriggsAmasco, highlights the benefits of FlexiPhalte and how it compares to
FlexiPhalte asphalt has been used on
innumerable major projects across the
UK including the Shard and Bluewater
shopping centre. The systems have an
undisputed record of success, particularly
in the field of heavily-trafficked and more
conventional roof deck applications.
The FlexiPhalte Triple Protection System
combines three key elements – FlexiPhalte
Pommar polymer modified mastic asphalt, high
performance membrane, and high performance
primer. It’s a powerful combination that helps
deliver a level of protection unmatched by any
other type of roofing system or membrane. The
system comprises a mixture of asphaltic cement
made up of bitumen asphalt or lake asphalt,
polymers, crushed limestone, crushed coarse
aggregate, pigments, binders, modifiers and
special aggregates. FlexiPhalte can be delivered
in block form for melting on-site, or where
fast track installation is required, and can be
delivered from the factory to the site by ‘hot
charge’ for instant installation.
When it comes to a building’s waterproofing, some
designers will specify a system at the structural
deck level which is overlaid with an appropriate
thickness of inorganic insulation and covered
with a strong running plate, such as concrete.
This method is not without its issues, however.
In the UK, there have been a number of failed
installations involving concrete overlays. It is,
therefore, vitally important to get the correct design
advice in these situations; a service expert such as
BriggsAmasco is more than happy to provide.
FlexiPhalte modified paving grade mastic
asphalt, as a surfacing material, contributes
substantially to the watertightness of a structural
deck. With this system, visible signs of long-term
traffic-related wear and tear are restricted to a
‘reasonable’ level. Large spillages of oil and
fuel may cause localised softening and staining
of mastic asphalt paving, but generally on open
vehicle surfaces and parking areas, normal
contamination can be disregarded and the proven
advantages of the FlexiPhalte surfacing far
outweigh these points.
Alternative systems, from sprayed or brushapplied
liquid skins to proprietary composite
surfacing techniques, are no match for FlexiPhalte’s
long-term durability and performance.
YOUR OPPORTUNITIES FOR
A FlexiPhalte system can be expected to provide
many years of trouble-free service. General
vehicle deck maintenance is essential to obtain the
maximum performance and ensure the longest life
expectancy. The system should be inspected twiceyearly,
preferably in the spring and autumn, and/or
after extremes of weather conditions.
