CLADDING & SHEETING Manufactured from Tata Steel’s Colorcoat HPS200 Ultra pre-finished steel, Catnic’s SSR² Roofing and Cladding system is an innovative, cost effective alternative to traditional copper and zinc systems. It has been designed for conventional pitched roofs as low as 5° degrees in the residential and commercial market. The system is quick and easy to install, reportedly seven times lighter than traditional roof tiles and featuring an integrated eyelet hole fixing strip, it means panels can simply be slotted into place. Furthermore, the SSR² system is BES 6001 certified and 100% recyclable, with a carbon footprint that is three times lower than some of the leading eco-designed urban roofing products. The importance of training It is important to remember that no matter how easy installation may seem, with any new system, it is always advisable to take advantage of any training opportunities that are available to ensure you have had detailed, best practice advice first hand. Located just a stone’s throw from Catnic’s head office, the new SSR² training centre in Ystrad Mynach features a fully equipped classroom environment. In addition, the centre has four specially developed rigs to allow for demonstrations and practical training. On entering the centre, groups are welcomed by Gareth Holvey, SSR² technical manager, who led 040 JULY 2017 RCIMAG.COM the day’s training and the Catnic team. Sessions begin in the classroom, where attendees are given an introduction to and a full theoretical understanding of the pre-coated metal standing seam system including all product components, fixings tools and materials as well as a useful PPE and safety reminder. Gareth Holvey then demonstrates the installation of the SSR² roof on one of the specially developed rigs. In-depth and in detail, this covers installation of the eaves plates, verge backing plates, mono ridge backing plates, individual panels, z bars, ridge flashings and verge flashings. The Catnic team focus on the key skills required to ensure successful results, including cutting sheets, making starter and end panels, cutting notches and making the end caps. Helpfully, Gareth covers and talks through a range of situations that could be encountered on site. This includes how to fit panels and flashings around a fixed rooflight with upstands as well as flues and chimneys. At this point attendees have the chance to get hands-on and install sections of panels themselves, with Gareth and the rest of the Catnic team offering tips and advice on best practice. Gareth explained: “We’ve set up the training centre to help roofing contractors get a realistic feel for the product and the experience of installing the complete system before they take it to site. The centre is aimed at giving them the opportunity to work with the SSR² system in a controlled environment. The feedback from everyone so far has been extremely positive and we have had a number of attendees go on to use the system for projects around the UK.” The aim of the new SSR² training centre is to provide roofing contractors and trade professionals with an in-depth understanding of the SSR² system. For those who are unsure or new to the product, the training centre undoubtedly provides a valuable combination of theory and practical, giving attendees the knowledge and experience required to add its installation to their range of services. Centre of excellence This month RCI paid a visit to Caerphilly, Wales, to see Catnic’s new training centre for the SSR² Roofing and Cladding system. The facility aims to provide roofing contractors and trade professionals with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to make the most of the business opportunity that the system represents Catnic’s course covers and talks through a range of situations that contractors could encounter on site “I originally attended Catnic’s training centre myself but found it so beneficial that I then sent more of my staff. They provided excellent instruction; I’d previously only worked with zinc systems that you apply by hand so it was great to get a practical experience with the tooling equipment required for the SSR² system. Following the training I’ve gone on to complete two projects, with installation of the system on one of them taking me and my team only one hour” Course attendee Les Wartnaby, MD at GL Cladding & Roofing Attendees at Catnic’s SSR² training facility
