LRWA VIEWPOINT The importance of training We all know the skills shortage is prominent in our industry, and a lack of Assessors in the industry can have a knock-on effect on the number of operatives being able to train and qualify, as well as keeping up the momentum of drawing in new recruits to the industry through the SAPs and SUPs. The capacity of available training centres is just as crucial as the Assessor shortage in our industry. To address this, the LRWA joined forces with contractor Briggs Amasco and the CITB to open a new training facility based at Cradley Heath, near Birmingham in 2012. Specifically designed to deliver specialist training leading to NVQ qualifications, the centre aims to develop the UK’s next generation of much needed liquid applied roofing contractors, and the LRWA continues to identify additional facilities to train operatives across the UK, including remote locations, to address the shortage. This also helps to maintain the highest of standards within the liquid roofing industry – which is the number one priority for the Association. The Assessor debate Much like the prominent ‘skills gap’ in the construction industry we are experiencing an Assessor shortage – presenting an issue if we are to meet growing output demand in the roofing sector and beyond. As an association, we’re at the forefront of development in training as we believe nurturing Rapid Curing • Seamless • Aesthetic 078 JULY 2017 RCIMAG.COM the talent of tomorrow’s workforce is vital.
