FLAT ROOFING
< five employers hiring more
apprentices to help them through the
current economic climate.
Several MAC members have
apprentices on the mastic asphalt course
at New City College Hackney, and we
receive some great feedback about how
keen and motivated the apprentices are.
For those who have to lodge away from
home to attend the apprenticeship training
programme at Hackney, the Construction
Industry Training Board (CITB) pays for
lodgings, as well as college tuition fees,
examination fees and travel costs. Firms
can also apply for grants for training if
they are registered with the CITB.
Over recent months, MAC and its
members have carried out work to
develop a new apprenticeship standard
for mastic asphalting, as part of the
government’s initiative to replace all
current Apprenticeship Frameworks
with new apprenticeships known as
Trailblazer Standards by the end of 2020.
An employer-led Trailblazer Group
has developed a new apprenticeship
standard, and this is currently
under approval by the Institute of
Apprenticeships. Participants who have
helped develop this standard have
included representatives from MAC,
CITB, National Federation of Roofing
Contractors and MAC members including
Briggs Amasco, Premier Mastic Asphalt,
Rio Asphalt and Sussex Asphalt.
Once approved, this new
apprenticeship standard for mastic
asphalting will help to continue to
ensure that we can attract and retain
qualified and skilled apprentices to
maintain the craft of mastic asphalting
and meet the needs of employers.
The proposed Mastic Asphalt
Apprenticeship is standalone from other
construction apprenticeships because
of the nature of the material and the
particular skills required to successfully
install it.

The fourth SPRA conference
and awards dinner was held
last month at Eastwood Hall in
Nottinghamshire, and brought
together an audience from across the
single ply roofing sector under the
event’s theme entitled: ‘Sustaining Single

The conference gave those assembled
the opportunity to celebrate SPRA’s
achievements over the past 12 months
and address key issues within the
industry.
Conference speakers delivered
engaging presentations on a wide
range of sustainability issues, including
specification and design, the circular
economy, waste management research,
environmental policy, employment law,
training and industry accreditation,
changes to CSCS visitor cards, mental
health and wellbeing, and staying
professional on social media.
The conference also provided an
opportunity to launch the newly revised
SPRA Design Guide 2018, along with new
Welding Guidance and updates on other
SPRA guidance and quality standard
documents. These documents were
provided to delegates on credit card-
sized flashdrives, and are also available
