ROOFING AWARDS 2014 Excellence on show RCI attended this year’s Awards ceremony where the winners were crowned in every discipline roofing has to offer, showcasing the talent and creativity present throughout the sector Lakesmere and Bauder were among the big winners at this year’s Roofing Awards, winning two awards each at the ceremony, which took place at the Hilton Metropole in central London on May 16. At an event that attracted a record 700 guests, joint hosts, presenter and interior designer, Linda Barker, and NFRC chief executive Ray Horwood gave out a total of 19 awards in various categories across the industry. The Excellence in Roofing Awards saw almost 50 projects pitted against each other across 11 different fields. The competition ran from September 2013 to January 2014, with the judging panel considering a range of criteria, including: degree of difficulty, aesthetics, problem-solving, Health & Safety, workmanship and environmental qualities. As well as these accolades, the Awards also recognised individuals and organisations in a selection of other categories that affect the trade; from health and safety to contributions in training. The NHBC’s Health & Safety Champion Award went to Lee Smith of Longworth Building Services. Following a motivational talk from a ladder fall victim, Lee began planning training courses and now speaks regularly at tool box talks. The Safety in Roofing Awards, handed out by the NFRC to members of different roofing disciplines, were awarded to Dougall Roofing & Waterproofing 016 JUNE 2014 RCIMAG.COM Solutions for slating and tiling; Industrial Building Solutions for flat roofing; and Impwood Roofing Company for industrial roofing and cladding. For his Exceptional Contribution to Training, Mike Fildes of Fildes Roofing was recognised by the CITB for his self-funded work providing training to a wide range of young people and disadvantaged personnel, and up-skilling the industry. More recently, Mr. Fildes founded his own successful Roof Training Group. The first of the specialist awards handed out by the Lead Sheet Association (LSA) went to selfemployed leadworker Harry Blain, who picked up the Young Lead Worker of the Year Award after producing the neatest and most technical leadwork. The LSA also presented the Murdoch Award to Martin (UK) Roofing Systems for its work on the London Oratory in Kensington, while the Murdoch Sponsor’s Award for best leadwork went to Lead Tech Roofing for Private House in the Cotswolds.
