FLAT ROOFING & FLEX SYSTEMS Guaranteed system Radmat Building Products has supplied a guaranteed roofing system to the £188 million Library of Birmingham, which is set to deliver high standards of environmental performance, long term waterproofing integrity and has enabled the creation of two biodiverse green roofs and a rooftop garden. Radmat-approved contractor Prater delivered a roofing solution that is BBA Certified to last ‘the life of the building’. Consisting of two layers of Radmat PermaQuik PQ6100 Hot Melt Monolithic waterproofing membrane, root resistant Cap Sheet and ProTherm inverted roof insulation, the entire roof was electronically tested for integrity prior to the installation of aluminium powder coated cappings to the perimeter roof upstands. Once the installation of the 7,500m² of PermaQuik PQ6100 roofing system on the roof and the ground level Podium deck was signed off by a Radmat technical adviser, Prater brought in specialist green roof contractor Frost Landscapes to carry out the installation of the green roofs. Aidan Lane, commercial director, Frost Landscapes, said: “Frosts were delighted to be part of the team which delivered this landmark project, and are thrilled to see so many of the public enjoying the intimate atmosphere the landscaping provides on each of the terraces.” Terry Perkins of Birmingham City Council said: “Birmingham City Council’s intention was to create a world class landmark civic building in Centenary Square. With the Library of Birmingham we have achieved this. We are delighted in the way in which the project has been delivered. From the outset the project team has worked closely together with shared goals and the completed building is testimony to good communication and a noncontractual approach to delivering a major scheme.” www.radmat.com Complex detailing Sika Sarnafil says the flexibility of its single ply system, alongside the expertise of roofing contractor Midland Single Ply (MSP), has helped in the installation of a bespoke and intricate roof crowning the home of West Berkshire Council in Newbury. Tasked with installing 800m2 of membrane to the flat roof and sloped edges, the company says MSP’s experience as a Sika Sarnafil registered contractor enabled it to successfully overcome a number of technical challenges. Changing from the originally specified membrane attached with adhesive, MSP opted for a mechanically fastened Sika Sarnafil S327-15EL single ply membrane, as the system offered greater suitability to the project’s complex detailing. Faced with the difficult shape and almost vertical pitch of the building’s mansard roof, each dormer window reveal was unique in size and required precise measurement and bending to fit. As well as this, throughout building works, the council office remained fully operational and MSP and Zink Copper Stainless 01992 801927 www.almhm.co.uk Sika Sarnafil says its S327-15EL membrane lent itself perfectly to the job contractor Francis Construction had to manage each installation to make sure the top floor offices would be missing the minimum number of windows at any one time. Dave Burgess from MSP explained the outcome: “This project required an extremely intricate installation, and our metal bending facility meant we were able to cut and bend each Sarnametal reveal on demand. With this, we were able to work successfully with Francis Construction and ensure the building could remain fully operational throughout building works.” We had never had the requirement for metal to be measured on site one day, cut and bent overnight and then fitted on site the next day in a job before, or had such tight critical path installation deadlines, but we are very pleased with the outcome.” www.sarnafil.co.uk CARO SUPPORT Immediate drainage between and under slabs - prevents build up of standing water Protection of waterproofing membrane from UV degredation, temperature extremes and direct contact damage Simple installation - reduces time and labour All services, drainage, conduits under slabs leaving unobstructed paved area Simple separation of supports for edge and corner details NEW Above average base area for greater weight distribution CARO PEDESTAL Available since 1985 All the benefits of the Caro Support plus Supports Decking and Paving from 3cm to 100cm Patented and Novel method of securing Decking Joists Full and infinite adjustment of supporting height 215mm base diameter to spread loading Ability to easily compensate for drainage falls (slopes) Shims and Levellers are available for base and head Available since 1978 Tel: 01763 244446 Fax: 01763 244111 Email: info@caro.co.uk Web: www.carosystems.co.uk Carosystems Limited, Edge Barn, 11 Market Hill, ROYSTON, Herts SG8 9JN
