RIA ROOFING FOCUS Roofing sector is first to manage its own CITB training funds through RIA Welcome to our Roofing Focus column from the Roofing Industry Alliance (RIA). This new, bi-monthly column will look at all the issues regarding training and best practice for the roofing sector, keeping readers up to date with the latest developments and what is available to the industry Following lobbying by the roofing industry to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for a more coordinated approach to training, the roofing sector has become the first in the construction industry to be allowed to manage its own CITB training funds through the Roofing Industry Alliance (RIA). The RIA includes all the major roofing trade associations and 13 Roof Training Groups (RTGs) in the UK, and is keen to support roof training by promoting best practice. The RIA’s board of directors is drawn from all areas of roofing and training, with the key aim of coordinating training information, publicising opportunities and filling any gaps in provision, whilst stimulating a whole range of training opportunities. Companies are encouraged to step up their game and invest in their workforce for a better, safer and more productive future. NFRC CEO Ray Horwood will play a leading part in taking the policy for training forward, assisted by RIA training manager Livia Williams. Denise Cherry, Chair of the Regional Roof Training Groups and RIA Board Member said: “The changes in methodology of funding the Regional Roof Training Groups has been a real catalyst for changes to training in the sector, and Livia Williams, as new training manager, has done some excellent exploratory and development work that is forming a really strong basis for focussed development of training across the industry.” Roof Training Groups (RTGs) Addressing the needs of roofing training and planting the seeds for a secure future. Facts about RTGs: • The 13 RTGs are in place to organise and coordinate roof training at all levels. • Located throughout the UK, the RTGs work directly with their local roofing contractors’ members. • Manufacturers, trade association representatives and local training providers can also be associate 030 MAY 2014 RCIMAG.COM members of the RTGs. • RTGs meet regularly to ensure regular exchange of information is maintained to facilitate best practice nationally. • RTGs are able to access or prepare courses specifically designed for the roofing industry and the needs of the group member companies. • RTGs are able to obtain early information and keep up to date with changes and initiatives that will affect the roofing industry, such as changes to legislation, grants, Building Regulations, European directives, environmental issues, technological developments and changes in materials, equipment and tools. • RTGs will work closely with the RIA on the development of pilot schemes for training initiatives nationally and specific to groups’ area needs.
