CLADDING & SHEETING Powerclad Keder Sheeting supplied by Industrial Textiles and Plastics (ITP) has been used to cover part of the frame of the unconventionallyshaped temporary roof at the South Crofty Tin Mine. The Mine has a long history, beginning in the 16th century. It has survived through the many economic crises that saw the closure of almost every other Cornish mine, resulting in the desolation of the local landscape, before closing in 1999. Due to the local significance of the site, a collaborative Co-operation Framework Agreement between South Crofty Mine Owners, Western Union Mines, and Cornwall Council was set out in 2009 and has now restored the distinctive New Cooks Kitchen Headframe. Manufactured using full-width material, ITP says the strength of the sheeting is significantly increased without any joins and seams. Marc van der Voort, managing director at ITP, said: “We are regularly approached for our Keder sheeting for use on large-scale bespoke projects. It is available in custom made sizes and rolled on a RCIMAG.COM 046 MAY 2014 heavy duty core for easy installation. The exceptional light transmission through the sheet facilitated the renovation work within South Crofty mine.” All elements of the Headframe have been retained and conserved as a monument to the long history of mining in the Camborne-Redruth district. Despite rising metal prices, the future remains uncertain for the mine, but local residents are said to be delighted to have secured a piece of their industrial heritage for future generations, and to be benefiting from the economic development plans for the area. www.itpltd.com Heritage restored Cembrit’s Cembonit has been used to create the exterior of the Central School of Ballet on Clerkenwell Road, London. Approximately 4,000m² of Cembonit in “Flint” has been used on the façade of the 34,000ft² ballet school. Designed by Allies and Morrison, the new building is comprised of 162 student residential units together with six state-of-the-art dance studios and all other facilities for the ballet school’s activities. The building features a multi layered façade that consists of eight to twelve story steel frame blocks with a combination of structural panels, rainscreen cladding, structural glazing and a coated steel outer grid. The Cembonit cladding was installed by ProCare of Kettering, and supplied by Vivalda of Birmingham. Ben Haveron, branch manager for Vivalda, said: “Cembonit is one of our key cladding products. It is reliable, attractive and a go-to product for exactly this sort of project. I’d have no hesitation in recommending it again.” Cembonit has a range of 11 pastel coloured strong boards Zink Copper Stainless characterised by a matt finish. The autoclaved cladding sheets are available in four natural colours, which exhibit a matt, optically level surface with a faint directional grain. During the production process, Cembonit receives a unique impregnation treatment that effectively protects against water staining and dirt, ensuring that the facade retains its appearance in both dry and wet weather conditions.
