INSULATION Brought up to spec Cold conservatory brought back to life Kingspan Insulation has announced the launch of two new products to join its Kooltherm K100 Range, designed to deliver lower U-values with a minimal construction thickness. Kingspan Kooltherm K112 Framing Board and K107 Pitched Roof Board are the latest products in the range, which was launched last year. Their advanced, fibre-free insulation core has a thermal conductivity of just 0.018 W/m.K across all available board thicknesses, which is said to be the lowest for any rigid phenolic insulation board. This composition offers architects, specifiers and builders the freedom to design and construct buildings with inherently outstanding fabric performance, without having to compromise on internal space. All the products in the Kooltherm K100 range are manufactured with a blowing agent that has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and very low Global Warming Potential (GWP). The insulation boards are non-deleterious, easy to handle and install, and are unaffected by air infiltration. Kooltherm, Therma and KoolDuct insulation products and cavity closers manufactured at Kingspan Insulation’s facilities in Pembridge and Selby are certified to BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products) ‘Excellent’. The certification provides reassurance that the materials used to produce Ravatherm UK’s products meet the highest levels of responsible sourcing practice. The BES 6001 certification can also contribute towards the award of credits within the BREEAM assessment for specifiers, and demonstrates to customers its excellent manufacturing performance as well as facilitating continuous improvement within the company. Ravatherm UK says this new certification reinforces its commitment to quality manufacturing as its POLYFOAM XPS has already achieved a certified BRE Green Guide Rating of ‘A’, as well as BRE approving and issuing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for the entire Ravatherm UK product range. These standards enable construction companies and specifiers to gain independent verification of a product’s environmental credentials, and provides peace of mind that the products offer a proven sustainable solution. Ravatherm UK announced the acquisition of the UK POLYFOAM XPS business of Knauf Insulation in January 2017, which offers a range of extruded polystyrene products for the construction markets. We’ve joined a company that has established success in the XPS business, and our offering to the marketplace is going from strength to strength.” www.ravatherm.com A Pulborough conservatory extension rendered unusable by cold, mould and condensation has been brought back into everyday use thanks to Ultrotherm Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) from Safeguard Europe. Located in a remote rural part of West Sussex, the walls of the extension are weather-facing on three sides, with each exterior wall featuring large windows, and because the conservatory was so exposed to the elements, large amounts of condensation and significant mould growth were present, while decoration had spoiled. The property owner was keen to fix the problem and make the room usable again but wanted to be able to keep the existing fixtures, skirting boards and radiators. It was decided that the best way to eliminate the condensation and mould in this particular property was to raise the temperature of the internal walls. The chosen solution was the Ultrotherm internal insulation system for solid walls. Although only 12mm thick, Ultrotherm typically improves the thermal resistance of solid brick walls by 40%. Supplied in a tile format, Ultrotherm is installed over existing plaster so it retains the character of a property as removing and reinstating fixtures like skirtings is unnecessary. The flexible nature of the tiles allows even the most awkward shapes and curves to be insulated; while insulated trim beads are used against door and window frames to reduce the problem of cold bridging In the Pulborough conservatory, once all of the tiles had been installed, they were then directly plastered onto using two coats of standard thistle board finish. www.safeguardeurope.com External Wall Insulation (EWI) by Saint-Gobain Weber was specified for a proportion of homes in the extensive property upgrade programme being carried out by Stevenage Borough Council in Hertfordshire. The homes, constructed in the late 40s, early 50s, are a combination of traditional solid brick and Wimpey No Fines system build. The u-value achieved for the improved properties is 0.30 W/m²K, down from the original 1.98 W/m²K rating. The webertherm XM EWI system specified 90mm EPS insulation and high performance render to achieve this improvement. The external visual results added appeal with the use of four alternative render colours from the palette of the weberplast TF acrylicbased, pre-mixed decorative finishes. Main contractor Wates Living Space, one of several contractors involved in this on-going renovation scheme, specified the Weber EWI system in order to meet the performance specification required by the Stevenage Borough Council property team who are familiar with the product’s qualities and attributes. Build-Therm Services, whose headquarters are in nearby St Albans, Hertfordshire, was responsible for the application. The webertherm XM highperformance external wall insulation and meshcloth reinforced polymer render system provides efficient thermal insulation for these refurbishments with the render coat and surface finish delivering water shedding capabilities to protect the building fabric. The 90mm of EPS insulation is mechanically fixed to the existing substrate surface and covered with a 6mm meshcloth reinforced coat of weberend LAC.
