EDITOR’S COMMENT RCIMAG.COM MAY 2017 005 It’s good to address the issues, but let’s not forget about the many positives It’s widely accepted that the construction industry – and roofing sector in particular – has an image problem. Just last month at the launch of the roofing sector’s Workforce Development Strategy, chief executive of the NFRC James Talman stated: “without doubt the roofing sector has long felt like the poor relation of the construction industry. We have a major image problem due to a lack of clear differentiation between a qualified skilled worker and an operative who calls him/herself a roofer after carrying out a health and safety test.” As mentioned in last month’s RCI, the Workforce Development Strategy is a step in the right direction to addressing the issues surrounding recruitment, training, accreditation and modernisation within the sector, and hopefully will go some way to banishing some of the outdated perceptions and help promote the many positives that a career in roofing can offer. Having covered the roofing, cladding and insulation sectors as editor of this magazine for the past five years, it’s given me the opportunity to visit manufacturers, suppliers and contractors, as well as sites and projects throughout the UK and see first-hand the great work and level of skill that is carried out every day. Like most industries, the roofing sector suffers from rogues and chancers who are happy to cut corners, dupe customers and make a quick pound with no thought of the long-term impact this has on the industry as a whole. As such, the Workforce Development Strategy’s goal of demonstrating to building owners and householders that “insisting upon roofing contractors with accredited roofers is simply an essential requirement” will go some way to overcoming the problem of the ‘cowboys’. But while it’s right for us to highlight the problems and shine a light on the issues the sector does have, it’s vital we don’t overlook and take for granted the great work that is carried out by so many in this industry day in, day out. I’d say making the public aware of the high quality work which this sector produces on a consistent basis is one way of changing the perceptions of this industry and ensuring this level of work is demanded from homeowners and building owners. Speaking of best practice, innovative solutions and high quality work, the UK Roofing Awards 2017 take place later this month. RCI would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those who submitted a project and wish all the finalists the best of luck on the 19th May. The awards have rightly become a key date in the roofing sector’s calendar and it’s a great opportunity for the sector to showcase the variety and demanding nature of a career in the roofing and cladding sectors.
